Discover the historic town of Andernach
History and culture from 2000 years of city history
Andernach is one of the oldest towns in Germany. This fact alone makes the Rhine city worth seeing. Here you will discover many historical buildings, monuments and cultural landscapes. The Rhine Gate in Andernach, for example, is one of the oldest double gates on the Rhine. On the sides of the massive gate you will also find the statues of the two baker's boys, who are significant figures of Andernach.
An industrial monument worth seeing in Andernach is the Alte Krahnen. The tower crane has stood on the banks of the Rhine since it was built in the 16th century. It used to be used for loading goods such as tuff and wine. The crane was enormously important for the town's regional economic influence.
The fact that Andernach has already existed for so many centuries can be seen above all in the traces of the ancient Romans. In the Historical Garden, the town presents excavations from Roman times. The columns, latrines and fountains, some of which are original and some of which have been reconstructed, give you an idea of how the Romans lived in Andernach back then.
Andernach's town castle and the Round Tower are also worth a visit. Both buildings date back to the Middle Ages and contribute to the historical character of the town. But Andernach, the "Edible Town", has much more to offer. You will see!
